The first question most people ask is, "what equipment do you have?" The truth of the matter is, that the equipment is less important than having someone who knows how to get a good picture and sound out of what they have. Some camera systems are better for one project than another. Right now the DSLR camera is a popular choice but it has some significant flaws that must be overcome. Knowing those limitations and how to address them is more important than having the latest expensive camera. I have a variety of cameras that I can use to match the correct situation with the most appropriate camera to get the best possible video. Here is a partial list of my gear.
Panasonic HMC-150 3CCD HD camera.
This is a great all round traditional video camera. Based on the successful DVX-100 and HVX-200, the HMC-150 has a layout that is well thought out, and easy to use. Buttons are easy to find by feel so adjustments can be made without taking the eye off the picture. Many cameras are switching from a CCD sensor to the CMOS due to costs but they suffer from rolling shutter and other artifacts that a camera like this one has no problems with. I frequently use this camera with a VariZoom remote zoom/iris/focus controller.
Shoots 1080i, 1080p 30 & 24, 720p 60 & 30.
Canon EOS 5D Mark II with 16-35 f2.8L and 24-105 f4L lenses and Magic Lantern.
This is the original low light performer of the DSLR world. It captures a beautiful picture with a shallow depth of field providing a film like picture. Sometimes a DSLR camera has the competition beat due to the large image sensor inside. Limitations are that there is no auto focus, and the audio is very challenging. I use the Magic Lantern tool to assist with my focusing and attach a Tascam DR-60D recorder to capture audio.
Shoots 1080p 30 & 24, 720p 60 & 30.
Panasonic AG-HSC1U 3CCD HD camera.
This little hand held camera has surprising performance due to its internal 3 CCD sensors and the picture nicely complements that of my HMC-150. When I need another camera angle I can set this on a tripod and let it roll.
Shoots 1080i.
GoPro HD Hero 3 Black camera.
Everyone has seen the commercials and the amazing footage you can get from a GoPro camera, but to really get those shots you have to be lucky or really good at what you do. I'd like to think I have a bit of both, and I have managed to get some great shots. The GoPro does have some big limitations though, like all tiny action cameras do, and knowing how to work around them is important.
Shoots 2.7k, 1080p 60, 30, 720p 120, 60 & 30 and more.
The camera is just one of many parts of the package, and I have much more equipment including several ENG tripods, many different microphones, several lighting kits, and much more. Contact me for more information about my gear.
